What is Arthritis?

Cartilage is a smooth elastic connective tissue that covers the end of the bones and helps them to move smoothly. This cartilage is accompanied by a membrane called synovium that produces fluids to keep cartilage healthy and agile. If cartilage goes through wear and tear, this synovium can produce extra fluid which can result in swelling and inflammation. If the condition of cartilage further deteriorates, adjacent bones may come in direct contact with each other due to insufficient lubrication from synovium membrane resulting in additional pain and inflammation.

Over a period of time in one’s lifespan (mostly after 55 years), this cartilage can degenerate which can cause joint inflammation and subsequent pain, which may lead to Arthritis which is leading cause of disability. Arthritis is a type of joint pain where the joint can go through multiple conditions like joint inflammation, tissues that surrounds joints gets weakened and there is friction between bones during mobility.

Causes of Arthritis

As one gets older, cartilage naturally deteriorates and the cushioning between joints fades away resulting in increased soreness. But usually for men arthritis is more common for someone below 45 years, while for women it is more common after 50 years of age.

Regular exercises and walks are essential for healthy cartilage since being overweight puts additional stress on joints and cartilage which will fasten its wear and tear.

If your ancestors have already gone through Arthritis, you are also most likely to develop same over a period of time.

Treatment of Arthritis

There is no straightforward remedy for Arthritis and the best way out is to prevent the causes of this problem. The first step to treat Arthritis is to first counter pain using multiple means which are mentioned below

Regular use of OTC(Over the counter) pain relievers can help to reduce pain to a certain degree. Some of the options include – aspirin, ibuprofen or acetaminophen (Tylenol)

Home Treatment

Low to moderate level exercises can help to keep muscles and bones strong – For Ex: Yoga, cycling, swimming, half-squat, leg raise, leg stretch etc. But high impact exercises should be avoided at all cost like heavy lifting, squats, games like tennis and football etc.

One can also use heat or cold therapy in affected parts to relieve pain and reduce inflammation.

It’s advisable to use braces, splints or canes which can help your knee to support the full body under these conditions. Please visit Best Knee Brace for more information on knee support.

Best option for home treatment is to cut down on your diet in order to eat only essentials and lose around 10% of your body weight from the present weight.

Dietary habits

One should try to avoid consumption of fried and processed fruits, overcooked items, sugar and refined carbs like white flour baked goods, meat, salted products, dairy products, alcohol and omega-6 fatty acids. Instead one should try to increase intake of following food items in the diet – spinach, fish oil, omega 3 alternatives like olive oil, nuts, flax seeds, pumpkin seeds, garlic, ginger and walnuts.

If the regular medication and exercise is not helping much and our situation is already degrading – it’s better to go for surgery but it should be the last resort mostly. There are multiple surgery options

Osteotomy is a surgery process where the excess bone parts from knee joints which are interfering with the smooth movements of the leg are removed.

If Osteotomy does not work, then second option is to go with arthrodesis which is helpful to treat severely deteriorated joints.

If any of the above option along with other medical advisories does not work, then the last option is to go for major arthroplasty which is total join replacement.

Best supplement for joint pain

Now choosing a supplement can prove to be overwhelming sometimes with variety of options at your disposal. There are multiple products with the same set of ingredients while a single product can have multiple ingredients, and it becomes difficult to understand whether the dosage is good enough to be beneficial for them.

Glucosamine Sulfate

Glucosamine helps in formation and repair of cartilage which can prevent joint pain and inflammation to a great degree. For someone exhibiting the symptoms of Arthritis, cartilage can break down but Glucosamine plays a major part in preventing that to happen. Also, it helps provide joint lubrication, strengthening joint tissues and maintain healthy joint structure.

There are essentially two types of glucosamine supplements – glucosamine sulfate and glucosamine hydrochloride. Studies have shown that Glucosamine sulfate improves joint pain considerably over Glucosamine hydrochloride when taken regularly over a period of time. The recommended dosage of Glucosamine sulfate is 1500 mg on a daily basis or to have it spread over different courses of meal with 500 milligram three times in a day over a course of one to two months.

Chondroitin Sulfate

Chondroitin (similar to Glucosamine) helps in preventing breakdown of cartilage from Arthritis. It boosts the shock absorbing properties of collagen and prevents the action of enzyme that is responsible for destroying Cartilage. In order to derive the maximum benefit of Chondroitin, it should be taken on a daily basis for up to years to notice changes in narrowing down of joint space.

Since both Chondroitin and Glucosamine are similar in properties, it is advised to take any one of them or combination of them on a regular basis. The recommended dosage of Chondroitin is 400 mg tablets two to three times in a day for a course of one to two months.

MethylSulfonylMethane (MSM)

MSM greatly aids in supporting the health of ligaments (these are connective tissues between the bones that holds them together) which can help address joint pain and inflammation. Studies have shown that sulfate in MSM helps in strengthening ligament strength and flexibility.

MSM is third in our list after glucosamine and chondroitin as first and second remedy options respectively. All of them can be taken together as well for multiple benefits associated.

The recommended dose for MSM is 500 mg two to three times in a day for a period of one to two months.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is crucial for bones and teeth and very much required in case of joint pain. Sun light is another major source of Vitamin D and you should definitely try to spare some 20-30 minutes from your busy schedule.

The recommended dosage of Vitamin D is 600 IU (International units) per day.

Omega-3 fatty acids

These fatty acids which is mostly found in fish oil controls inflammation to a great degree. Omega-3 fatty acid supplements can also ease stiffness caused by joint inflammation. Other sources of Omega-3 fatty acids are avocados, nuts and flax seeds.

Green Tea

It is a great elixir for someone with knee pain. It contain compounds with powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties to counter joint pain.

Calcium rich diet will ensure that the strength of your bone is up to the mark. Some of the best sources of calcium are green leafy vegetables, milk, yogurt, broccoli etc.
